Multiplication Tables Check

The MTC is the Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check, run by the Government. In 2020 (summer term), all Year 4 children will take this new national assessment: the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC).

The purpose of this assessment is to help identify, and support further, children who have not yet mastered fluent recall of their 'times tables' (up to 12 x 12).These include multiplying numbers by both zero and one (e.g. 8 x 0 or 1 x 12)

Don't forget, too, the commutative property of multiplication facts: this means that two numbers can be multiplied in either order to give the same product [answer] (e.g. 7 x 6 = 6 x 7 which means that 7 x 6 = 42 and 6 x 7 = 42).

This useful picture below shows the times table facts that children will have learned in Year 2, Year 3 and Year 4. As you can see, in year 4 children should already know the times tables in orange and green, and so this year they should just need to focus on the facts in purple for the times tables they do not yet know. Have a check, do you know all your Year 2 and Year 3 times tables fluently? Timestable facts to learn in each year group, from Year 2 to Year 4. Do you know them all?
