E-Safety

Parents can protect their children online at home by following some e-safety tips:

 

• Keep computers in a central place. This will make it easier to keep an eye on children’s activities.
• Teach children about internet safety as it’s impossible to monitor their online activity all the time. Explain why it’s important not to arrange in-person meetings with people they meet online, and why they shouldn’t share personal information with online strangers because people may not be who they claim to be..
• Use Google’s SafeSearch to keep adult content out of your child’s search results – if you’re worried about children removing the SafeSearch setting without your knowledge you can protect it with a password.
• As entertaining as interactive gaming is, be aware that children can speak, using their own voice, with strangers online. Take advantage of any Parental Control settings built in to the game or the console or PC and monitor your child’s online use as far as you can.
• Be aware of cyber bullies and explain to your child that it is important that they don’t respond or retaliate to a cyber bully. If they are cyber-bullied, make sure they tell you about it.
• If your child is being harassed by a classmate or another player online, follow the game’s reporting procedures to make them aware of what’s going on.
